In conjunction with Watches and Wonders Geneva 2021, A. Lange & Söhne presents its first novelties of the year, one of which is a totally brand new model: the Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar. The rest are stunning new variations of existing models, namely the Little Lange 1 Moon Phase and Triple Split.
Press Release details with important notes and commentary in italics.
Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar
The new Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar is the first Lange 1 model that is entirely dedicated to the perpetual calendar complication. The watch, put simply, is a pared down version of the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar which for the past 9 years has been the line’s most complicated model. The Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar lacks the tourbillon regulator of the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar but gains the ingenious combined moon phase/day-night indicator of the Lange 1 Moon Phase. Another notable difference between the two similar watches is in the sub-dials. The main sub-dial of the Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar features a guilloched track for the hours and minutes, whereas in the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar, the entire sub-dial is adorned with concentric guilloche pattern. Another point of discrepancy is in the orientation of the moon phase display within the seconds sub-dial; in the former, it is upright, while in the latter, it is rotated southwesterly.
The aesthetics of Lange’s flagship debutant is bold and beautiful. Two versions have been introduced for the year: the first is equipped with a pink gold case and grey dial, the second, a limited edition of 150 watches, features the spectacular combination of a white gold case and pink gold dial. More cosmetic variations can be expected in future, but it’s not going to be easy to top this year’s striking flavors.
Little Lange 1 Moon Phase
The Little Lange 1 Moon Phase isn’t a true novelty per se, because it’s been around for a while now. What’s new for this year is the remarkable facelift that it has been given, making it arguably the most gorgeous novelty of the lot. Befitting its main complication – the moon phase indicator – the dial of the new Little Lange 1 Moon Phase in white gold is coated with dark blue gold flux that shimmers like stars with a copper hue. The applied Roman numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock, as well as the star-shaped hour markers between them are crafted from rhodiumed gold just like the hands. Two versions have been introduced in this expression of the Little Lange 1 Moon Phase: one with a bezel tastefully set with 56 brilliant-cut diamonds, and one without.
Triple Split
The Triple Split needs no introduction. Debuting in 2018, the Triple Split is the first and only mechanical split-seconds chronograph in the world that allows the measurement of intermediate and reference times for durations of up to 12 hours. The former edition in white gold with a grey dial is now followed by a second version – also in a limited edition of 100 pieces – in pink gold with a blue dial and rhodié-coloured sub-dials. Despite the wealth of displayed information, an organised material and colour concept make it easy to assign each of the ten hands to a specific function.
