Commentary
This new release is the previously rumored Leica Q2 007 Edition. And not to be confused with as it is in addition to the now sold out Daniel Craig x Greg Wililiams Edition released earlier this year. In February 2021, Leica announced the Q2 Daniel Craig x Greg Williams limited edition. Greg Williams is a renowned British photographer who collaborated with James Bond star Daniel Craig to design that edition.
The 007 Edition is to celebrate the release of the 25th Bond movie – No Time to Die, which is set to finally be released in September 30, 2021. This edition is limited to 250 pieces, and comes with leather wraps on the Q2 in an Ocean Green colourway. The Ocean Green is very subtle, looking almost like a dark grey perked up with a tinge of green. The camera is intended as an understatement of elegance, and achieves this with ease. Perhaps like James Bond himself, the quintessential English gentleman.
The Leica Q2 is a full frame mirrorless camera with a non-interchangeable but extremely fast Summilux 28 mm f/1.7 ASPH lens. Handling and the camera is exactly the same as the standard Q2, which is a very good thing. The Q2 has excellent ergonomics and handling, and produces superb image quality. The only changes between the standard Q2 and the 007 Edition are the cosmetic changes due to the Bond branding and the 007 accessories including the special carry bag with calf strap. The set comes with a hand grip, also wrapped in Ocean Green leather and a finger loop of the same material. The lens cap also carries the 007 logo. The 007 Edition is limited to only 250 pieces, with the sequential serial number laser engraved under the display glass. This is the same discreet engraving as is used on the previous Daniel Craig x Greg Williams version, and is in contrast to other limited editions where the serial numbers are usually engraved by the hotshoe mount. Once again underlining the ultimate in understatement. Interestingly, S/N 007 is one of the numbers available, and no doubt it will be highly sought after.
The retail price for the Q2 007 Edition is SGD 11,690 inclusive of GST. The standard non-limited Leica Q2 in black retails for SGD 8,200. The Q2 Daniel Craig x Greg Williams retailed for SGD 10,100, and is completely sold out.
We think this camera has a strong potential to be a collector’s item, and with the very small limitation, will be sold out soon. You can register your interest to purchase one on this link here.
New: Leica Q2 “007 edition”
- New collaboration between two iconic brands.
- Leica is launching a Q2 “007 edition” camera, limited to 250 pieces.
- An exclusive photography exhibition celebrating the release of No Time To Die will feature behind-the-scenes photographs shot on Leica cameras by Michael G. Wilson, Daniel Craig, Nicola Dove and Greg Williams.
This special edition Leica Q2 features the iconic 007 logo on the deck cap and the famous Bond gun barrel design on the lens cap. Each limited edition camera will be individually numbered, making the “007” camera a sought-after collectable. The camera comes in a customised and handcrafted case designed by the British luxury suitcase brand Globe-Trotter.
Inspired by the bespoke Globe-Trotter cases that feature in No Time To Die, both the camera case and camera are finished in the same Ocean Green leather colourway.
The concept of a Leica and 007 partnership began with Michael G. Wilson. Wilson, producer of the James Bond film series together with his sister Barbara Broccoli, is a leading expert on 19th century photography and founded The Wilson Centre for Photography. Wilson’s passion for photography provided the natural spark for the collaboration.
Leica’s partnership with British cinema’s longest-running film franchise has seen the cameras play a role both on set and behind the scenes. In No Time To Die, Leica worked with the 007 production team to display Leica cameras on the sets of James Bond’s Jamaican home, and fittingly the Leica Q2 in Q’s home in London.
The Leica Q2 “007 Edition” will be launched on September 09, 2021 at the official opening of the Leica Gallery London exhibition: No Time to Die – Behind the Scenes, an exclusive photography exhibition featuring behind-the-scenes photos shot on Leica cameras.
The photographs were taken by long time producer Michael G. Wilson, James Bond actor Daniel Craig, and the renowned photographers Nicola Dove and Greg Williams. The exhibition will present an edit of 25 images curated by Michael G. Wilson.
Further exhibitions will be on show in Tokyo, Osaka, Vienna, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, Singapore, China, Seoul and Salzburg in September/October 2021. A portfolio of No Time To Die – Behind the Scenes will be published in the magazine Leica Fotografie International 7/2021, that will appear on September 20, 2021. No Time To Die will be released in cinemas in Singapore as of 30 September, 2021.
