New: Hanhart 417 ES now with Flyback and in Panda/Reverse Panda dial
Released to celebrate Hanhart’s 140th anniversary, the four new models of the 417 ES Flyback pay tribute to the Hanhartr history in producing precision chronographs. They are part of the permanent, non-limited collection and available now for EUR 2,390 incl. VAT.
Commentary
A fresh, but very traditional looking new chronograph with Flyback from Hanhart. This watch looks very much like the 417 ES we reviewed in 2021, which was part of the 417 ES released earlier. This novelty is also not new in having two sizes in 42mm and 39mm, as the 417 ES 1954 released earlier this year also introduced the 39mm, historically accurate size. It is also not the first to a Panda dial.
What is new is the Reverse Panda dial, and the release of both 42mm and 39mm sizes simultaneously. Other than the colour reversal of black and white, the dials also feature small differences, notably the 39mm models have a notation saying “Antimagnetic”. This is perhaps the key distinguishing technical feature between the two, as the 39mm models have an antimagnetic resistance up to 16,000 A/m according to DIN 8309, while the 42mm versions have none.
While the Reverse Panda model features lume on the sub-dials which glow in the dark. The other dial, hands and indices are the same on all four models.
The case is offered in two sizes of 42mm and 39mm, but without a direct side by side comparison, it is not immediately apparent which is the larger or smaller. The 42mm dial has a bit more room on the outer edges, detectable as more distance from the sub-dials to the edge than the 39mm.
But more importantly, this set of novelties now feature the Sellita AMT5100M, which now features a column wheel. Despite the 5100 nomenclature, which we first thought hints at the Lemania 5100 as the base, the movement is a derivative of the Valjoux 7751 (manual wind version of the 7750). Sellita have done extensive reworking to incorporate the column wheel.
Both models feature the same movement, but only the 42mm models have a sapphire case back to show the movement, and the blue column wheel can be observed. The 39mm models have a closed steel case back.
An interesting note is that the cute red varnished pusher on the chronograph is now deleted. We are slibhtly disappointed as we loved the back story behind this red pusher. The reason for the red pusher is a reminder for the pilot so that he does not accidentally reset the stopwatch. And is painted by the wife or girlfriend in red nail polish as a reminder to think of her and return home safely.

140 years of Hanhart: Column wheel chronograph with flyback
140 years ago, Johann A. Hanhart set the cornerstone for Hanhart as a brand. What started as a shop selling watches swiftly evolved into a manufacture, producing pre- cise timepieces with a stop function. In celebration of this anniversary, we present our new 417 ES Flyback. The watch is available in two case sizes with two dial op- tions, each of which is equipped with our manual-winding flyback calibre with its inte- grated column wheel.
The importance of the 417 ES
When we reissued the legendary 417 ES two years ago in a 42 mm stainless steel case, it marked the beginning of a great success story for Hanhart. Earlier this year, we released an additional version — the 417 ES 1954 — which, with its 39 mm case, is the same size as the historical watch dwelling in our museum. Today, we are celebrating 140 years of Hanhart by launching four versions of the new 417 ES Flyback.
The return of the Flyback
In tribute to our long tradition of producing chronographs, we are bringing the flyback function back to our most popular collection. Even the historic 417 ES, originally de- signed for pilots of the German Air Force, was equipped with “Temposchaltung”, as the flyback function is also called. The mechanism allows immediate measurement of a new timing interval by using the reset pusher. The new, first-class AMT5100 M cali- bre originates from Sellita’s manufacture AMT department. It controls the chrono- graph via column wheel and has a power reserve of at least 58 hours when fully wound.
Two sizes for every wrist
In order to make our new 417 ES Flyback as versatile as possible, we offer both 39 mm and 42 mm stainless-steel cases. There are numerous fans in the Hanhart com- munity for both sizes and we want to offer the perfect watch for everyone’s wrist. Apart from the size, there is only one technological difference between the 39 mm and 42 mm models: the 42 mm watch has a transparent sapphire crystal caseback revealing our new flyback calibre, while the 39 mm model is manufactured with an anti-magnetic case, which is resistant up to 16,000 A/m according to DIN 8309. All of the new timepieces are water-resistant up to 10 bar.
Panda and Reverse Panda
In addition to the technical development, the new 417 ES Flyback stands out visually from the previously launched versions. Each case size is available with both the white and black Panda dial or the black and white Reverse Panda dial. Either of the two designs provides strong contrasts and perfect readability even in poor lighting conditions, thanks to use of Super-LumiNova C3.
