Jacob & Co. Twin Turbo Furious
For years, Jacob & Co.’s ‘Grand Complication Masterpieces’ collection has made headlines for its visually inspiring, technically sophisticated timepieces. Back in 2016, the brand introduced the mind-blowing Twin Turbo watch which showcased a world premiere combination of a decimal minute repeater and twin triple axis tourbillons. This year, the New York-based company is set to unveil the Twin Turbo Furious, building on the complexity and ingenuity of its predecessor with the addition of a monopusher chronograph and accelerated twin triple axis tourbillons.
Twin accelerated triple axis sequential tourbillon
The twin tourbillons on the Twin Turbo Furious aren’t your everyday variety tourbillons. They rotate on three axes at accelerated rates; it takes just 24 seconds to complete a full rotation on the first axis, 8 seconds on the second axis, and 3o seconds on the third. This is significantly faster than the twin tourbillons on the original Twin Turbo which take 8 minutes to sweep through all possible positions (compared to the 30 seconds on the new Twin Turbo Furious). A regulator between the two tourbillons ensures that timing rates and discrepancies are averaged out.
Decimal minute repeater
The minute repeater is one of, if not the most revered and coveted complication in all of haute horlogerie, even today. This is largely due to the difficulty involved in assembling and adjusting the mechanism. The Twin Turbo Furious is endowed with a decimal minute repeater which functions slightly differently compared to a regular minute repeater. After chiming the hours, the decimal minute repeater does not chime the quarters like a regular minute repeater would – instead it chimes every ten minutes.
Planetary gear power reserve
The power reserve is displayed at 6 o’clock on the dial. Thanks to a planetary system comprising a differential gear mechanism, the hand points to a full power reserve on the left, then moves to the right as the 50 hours of power reserve winds down. A crank on the crown at 3 o’clock is used to wind the watch.
Monopusher chronograph with reference time
What really separates the Twin Turbo Furious from the original Twin Turbo is the incorporation of a monopusher-activated, column-wheel, horizontal clutch chronograph. Jacob & Co. takes it even further by adding a ‘reference time’ indicator, a feature that will interest motor sports enthusiasts. The reference time indicator offers instant reading inspired by the timekeeping panels once used in motor racing; with each lap, the panels displayed on the side of the track would tell the drivers the time difference between their time and the lap reference time. A display located on the centre of the dial indicates the difference in seconds in comparison to a reference time initially set by the chronograph’s hands.
The Jacob & Co Twin Turbo Furious comes in a 57 x 52 x 17 mm case crafted in 18K rose gold and carbon fibre. The retail price of the timepiece will only be disclosed during Baselworld 2018.
