We covered the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Homage to Walter Lange Piece Unique in Stainless Steel in some detail giving the background story earlier, but did not have the opportunity to photograph the watch until now. Here are the live photographs of the unique piece, which will be auctioned at the Phillips Auction in Geneva on May 12 and 13. The watch can be viewed at The Hour Glass from now till April 8, 2018.

Walter Lange passed away on the second day of SIHH 2017. In our In Memoriam article,we describe him as a giant in horology, having committed his life the firm which bear the name of his great great grandfather. This Homage piece is created by A. Lange & Söhne in his memory. It will be auctioned at the Phillips Auction Spring Sale on May 12 and 13. Proceeds will benefit a charity.

The case, dial and hands: 1815 “Homage to Walter Lange” Ref. 297.078
The case is in Stainless Steel, which is the first time it is offered by A. Lange & Söhne on an official basis. Earlier stainless steel Langes have been offered privately to collectors through authorized dealers. This practice stopped in 2000.
The reference number 297 is the codified to refer to Walter Lange’s birthday of 29th July.
The Homage to Walter Lange has a black enamel dial, made in-house in Glashütte. On the photographs it appears to have a blue tinge. This is due to the double sided anti-reflection treatment applied to the sapphire glass.
The movement: L.1924
The movement caliber number is also unique, as it is the birth year of Walter Lange. All other Lange movement calibers follow the nomenclature of the year of development, followed by a serial number for movements which began in the same year. For example L.901 for the Lange 1 began development in 1990, and is the first caliber which began that year.
The movement is created especially to honour of company founder F.A. Lange, who designed the jumping seconds mechanism in 1867. Details in our review of the gold edition of the 1815 Homage to Walter Lange here.
The rear sapphire glass is also treated with anti-reflective coating, resulting in the bluish tinge on the upper part of the photograph.
