Panerai has been associated with the Italian military for over a century, providing them with high-precision instruments. Guido Panerai’s Radiomir, which was patented in 1916, became a icon for its radium-based illumination for visibility in the dark. The Radiomir prototype was presented in 1935, and over the years, the watch has been progressively improved. In 1996, Panerai leaped into the commercial watch market, and today the brand is known for its innovative designs and contemporary developments.

The Case and Dial

The Radiomir Quaranta Goldtec is set in a polished Goldtech case measuring 40mm in diameter and 10.15mm in thickness. The cushion-shaped case is a nod to the original Radiomir design, and the cone-shaped crown is a distinguishing feature of the collection. The white sun-brushed sandwich dial is simple and elegant, with indexes and numerals at twelve and six o’clock. The beige Super-Luminova® illuminates in green in the dark, reflecting light rays with the movement of the wearer. The watch comes with a matte brown alligator strap, which adds a touch of relaxed luxury to the overall aesthetic.

The Movement

The Radiomir Quaranta Goldtech is powered by the P.900 calibre, a 4.2mm thick next-generation automatic movement with 23 jewels and 171 components. It is the first of its size from Panerai to combine the date and three days of power reserve. The watch is water-resistant up to 3 bar (~30 metres) and comes with a Panerai GoldtechTM buckle. The movement is precise and reliable, and the power reserve is sufficient for a weekend watch swap.

Concluding thoughts

The Radiomir Quaranta Goldtech has a classic size of 40mm, which makes it more wearable for those who prefer a smaller case. This is a strength for individuals with smaller wrists who may find Panerai’s traditional larger case size to be uncomfortable. However, this smaller case size may detract from the watch’s traditional military design, which has been a hallmark of Panerai’s identity. This may be a downside for those who appreciate the brand’s larger case size and military-inspired design. Overall, the Radiomir Quaranta Goldtech is a versatile timepiece that is well-suited for those who prefer a classic and more wearable size, but may not be as suitable for those who are drawn to the larger case size and military design that is characteristic of the brand. The watch is priced at US$18,200.
