So, the buzzword in the recent months has certainly been Artificial Intelligence (or AI, for short), with the introduction of the incredible ChatGPT.

We thought we might want to have some fun with this newfangled technology. Hence, we logged onto ChatGPT and decided to ask the AI chatbot to craft the perfect six-watch collection.

Here’s what the AI had selected. With our own thoughts thrown in for good measure.

Rolex Submariner

ChatGPT’s response: The Submariner is an iconic dive watch and a must-have for any serious watch collector. It’s versatile enough to be worn with a suit or while diving, and its timeless design has made it a classic.

The first watch that ChatGPT had selected is the iconic Rolex Submariner. There is no question, in our opinion, that a Rolex will be selected, but it was more of a “which one?” instead. The Submariner is a great choice, given its timeless and everlasting design, coupled with its robust built quality.

Although we do think that a dress watch is the more appropriate option when it is paired with a suit, the Submariner (or most sports watches from Rolex, for that matter) has been a popular choice with office executives. It is easily recognisable, but more importantly, it is a watch that is ever reliable on most conceivable occasions.

The price of the Submariner begins at S$12,700, and it is certainly one of the essential timepieces to have (or aspire to have) in any watch collection.

Patek Philippe Nautilus

ChatGPT’s response: The Nautilus is another classic watch that’s highly sought after by collectors. Its distinct porthole design and intricate finishing make it a true work of art.

Besides Rolex, Patek Philippe is another brand that we have expected the AI Chatbot to select. Of course, amongst the many brilliant watches that the manufacturer had produced, ChatGPT had selected the Nautilus.

The Nautilus is a great watch. It has the classic design that was conceived by Gerald Genta, coupled with incredible finishing on all aspects of the watch – notably its case and movement. Then again, it is Patek Philippe after all, and one does not expect anything less than that.

However, ChatGPT forgot one key thing: Availability. The Nautilus is almost impossible to get, unless one is willing to fork out a premium in the secondary market. But if one has the good fortune, the new 5811/1G (the base Nautilus is now only available in white gold) can be yours at a cool S$92,900.

Omega Speedmaster Professional

ChatGPT’s response: The Speedmaster is known as the “Moonwatch” because it was the first watch worn on the moon. It’s a chronograph that’s rugged enough for space exploration, but stylish enough for everyday wear.

Given the strong and interesting provenance of the Omega Speedmaster Professional, the Moonwatch – as it is often affectionately termed – is an obvious choice as well.

Whilst it was originally produced as a sports or racing watch, its association with astronomy was only established a few years later, when NASA selected the Speedmaster for both its Gemini and Apollo missions. Its position in the history books was cemented on 21 July, 1969, when Buzz Aldrin wore his Speedmaster as he exited the spacecraft and took his first step on the moon.

Similarly, the Moonwatch is a versatile watch that is extremely popular with the executive crowd. The fact that it is a manual-winding timepiece adds to the appeal as well. The new Speedmaster Co-Axial Master Chronometer Chronograph is priced at S$9,750, and this is a great watch for any collectors – especially if one is looking to get his or her first luxury timepiece.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

ChatGPT’s response: The Royal Oak was the first luxury sports watch and is still a favorite among collectors today. Its octagonal bezel and integrated bracelet are instantly recognizable.

Following the Nautilus, ChatGPT had selected another legendary masterpiece from the late Gerald Genta: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.

The Royal Oak can be considered as the pioneer in the luxury sports watch category. Introduced in 1972, the Royal Oak broke all the rules when it came with an octagon bezel, exposed screw heads, and an integrated bracelet design. It was a bold gamble that had eventually paid off, and the rest is history.

We have always been fans of the non-complicated models, as it truly allows the design of the timepiece to stand out. Pictured above is the 39mm “Jumbo” Extra-Thin 16202ST, which is perhaps one of the best modern-day representations of the original Royal Oak. The last known retail price of the watch is US$33,200 (approximately S$44,325), but its availability is another huge question altogether.

Seiko SKX007

ChatGPT’s response: The SKX007 is a more affordable watch that’s still highly regarded by collectors. It’s a durable dive watch that offers great value for its price.

Now, the Seiko SKX007 (picture above courtesy of Seiko’s Store on Amazon) came to us as a surprise. We are definitely acquainted with this timepiece (the author personally used to own one), but we were indeed impressed that ChatGPT had decided to select this particularly awesome timepiece – amongst the many other options available.

There is just something about the SKX007 that makes the watch so brilliant. It is extremely well-priced, with a robust built quality and great functionality. In fact, it is the perfect watch if one intends to wear a timepiece for outdoor activities – from water sports to a hiking trip. You know you can count on the SKX007, even when it is thrown into challenging environments.

There is only one problem. The 41mm SKX007 has been discontinued, so the only option available to get this incredible timepiece is through the secondary market (or, the remaining inventory from retailers). There is just something about the SKX007, and we are certain that it is a timepiece that most will appreciate – regardless of whether one is a seasoned or new collector.

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso

ChatGPT’s response: The Reverso is a classic dress watch with a unique twist. Its rectangular case can be flipped over to protect the dial, making it perfect for sports and other activities where the watch might be damaged.

The last timepiece that ChatGPT had selected is none other than the venerable Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso.

The Reverso first debuted in the 1930s, for an interesting reason. Back then, the Polo players requested César de Trey to produce a timepiece that can withstand the knocks from polo mallets. This gave César the idea to create a timepiece with a reversible case, and hence the Reverso was born.

Over the years, Jaeger LeCoultre had produced many iterations of the Reverso. There is certainly something for everyone, although we have a soft spot for both the time-only and complicated models (such as the new Chronograph, or the exquisite Tribute Nonantième). The price of the base time-only Reverso begins at S$9,750, and frankly, the Reverso is a great piece that deserves a spot in any watch collection.

Concluding Thoughts

ChatGPT’s selection is great, albeit predictable. Funnily enough, three out of the six watches are almost impossible to attain for a layman, due to the crazy demand and years-long waitlist. Of course, it is possible in the secondary market, but we will be staring down at a large premium in that case.

We would have loved to see some of the more uncommon names, such as the likes of a Lange, Vacheron, or even a Breguet for that matter. We thought that these brands have something brilliant to offer, and that its quality or provenance should have made it easy to rationalise as well. Then again, what do we know?
